Download entire website via FTP / SFTP Backup

Uranium Backup is able to make several download and upload operations of any file and folder, in a simple and powerful manner.

These features can result extremely useful to execute backup to remote servers (with possibility of zip compression and encryption), to make the upload, and so the automatic update, of entire web sites, or, like in the example below, to execute the download of the entire content of a site or other data on a web server.

Ftp features are available starting from the Base version.

Let's see below the simple steps to configure an ftp donwload:

1 - Backup set creation:

In order to create new backup set, if there aren't other backup sets created previously, you must click on the link shown in the image, then specify a name and click the button "Apply". If there are already other backup sets you must open the "File" menu and click the item "Create New Backup Set".

2 - Adding the item (a folder) in which files will be downloaded:

With this operation you will add in the list of the items the folder where website files will be downloaded. In order to add this folder you must do the operation shown in the image above: in the panel "Items and Destinations" you must click on the link "Click here to add...", then select the folder and click the button "OK".
The folder will be inserted in the list, like shown in the next image.

3 - Setting of the ftp download:

In order to add the ftp download process, let's click on the item with the mouse right button and select the menu voice "Add/Modify/Remove FTP Download".
Let's see in the image below how to configure the download:

First you must set connection data, or to be more precise the server address, the port, the user name and password. We can also decide if use the passive mode (we need it only for particular cases and for compatibility with some servers/networks) or if use the SFTP protocol (SSH 2 FTP), if our server supports it
The port to use, except for some special cases, it is always the 21 (or the 22 for SFTP).
In most cases you will not need to use neither the passive mode nor the SFTP protocol.

Now we must set one of the other fundamental things: the folder(s) to download.
We can see,  in the image above, the list of these folders and the buttons to add and configure them:

In case that we want to download the entire website, and our server contains in its root folder only our site, we can add only the slash "/".
We can make that using the button "Add Manually".

If instead we want to download a specific folder, we can add it to the list in two different ways: with button "Add manually" (pay attention on type the path correctly) or with button "Select by FTP Client". In this way will be opened the ftp client application included in Uranium, and this program will allow to us to browse folder structure on the web server. Once we are in the desidered folder we will need to click the button "Select" shown in the image below, in order to add the current directory to the list:

In addition, for each folder added to the download list we can set a specific file extension filter (for example to download or exclude only certain types of file) or we can decide if download or not the subfolders. In order to do that, you will need to select a folder in the list and click buttons "Set/Modify Filter" and "Exclude / Include subfolders".

Finally, we can see in the bottom of the window another option, that allows to decide if copy the item content (in our example the folder "C:\WebsiteBakcup") in its destinations (if these are present in the backup set) after download completion. In addition we can decide if do this copy always or only if there were not been errors.

Once all settings are made, we can click the buttons "Apply" and "OK" in order to apply our settings and close this window. We can return in this window to modify these settings clicking again the menu voice "Add/Modify/Remove FTP Download". An item for which is set the ftp download will have a blu arrow in the folder icon, like we can see in the image below:

4 - Execute the backup set:

In order to start a backup you must right-click on Backup Set name and select the item "Run selected Backup Set".
During the backup procedure, the program will show in the right bottom of the screen all the information about backup progress: the number of copied files, the size, the elapsed and remaining time, etc...

Once download will be completed, the program will proceed to copy the item in its destinations, if we selected the related option. For example we can burn on DVD the item after download completion, or compress it in zip format, or copy it on tape, or transfer it on another ftp server, etc...

Finally, if we want to remove download settings from the item, we can simply click on the menu voice "Add/Modify/Remove FTP Download" and click the button "Delete FTP Download settings for this item".

N.B.: for files download are valid the same rules of ftp upload, regarding mainly the various overwrite settings. By default the program will download only that files that are newer than local files. This behavior can be modified in the backup set options, in the panel "Direct copy / FTP", sub-panel "FTP Transfers".
