Multiple folder synchronization with integrated zip compression

Uranium is not only a backup software, but also a prowerful synchronization and data transfer utility.

In this tutorial you will see how to configure the program to make synchronization of two or more folders, with, in addition, the possibility to make zip compression of each single file, an original and innovative feature for synchronization software.

With the term "Synchronization" we mean the procedure to mantain two or more folders perfectly identical. It is very important to highlight the fact that Uranium, in comparison to other software, allows to synchronize a folder with an unlimited number of other folders and to make at the same time zip compression of each file. The synchronization can be made to several types of destinations: external hard disks, usb pens, nas servers, other network computers, etc...

In order to have the feature to delete in the destination folders that files no more existing in the source folders (in the "direct copy") you need at least the Base version.

Let's see the simple configuration in order to synchronize the content of a folder in two different destinations. First it is necessary to create a new backup set and add in the list of the items the folder we want to synchronize:

Once you added the folder, you must set up for this item the synchronization option. As you can see in the following image, you simply need to right-click on the item, and the select the menu voice "Enable / Disable file deletion in the destinations (direct copy)". Like specified also in the menu voice's name, this option allows both to set up and also to remove the synchronization behavior for the selected item.

Once you set up sinchronization the item's icon will appear like in the image below:

When a folder item has the icon shown in the image, this means that the program, in addition to the copy, will perform also a comparison between each file in source and destination folders, deleting from destination folders that files (and subfolders) no more existing in source folders. In this way the folder contents will be always identical.

At this point the last thing to do is to add the destination where to copy the item. So let's click on the link shown in the image: "Click here to add a destination folder for this backup".

Then let's select the destination folder, that will be add to the Common Destinations list:

As we said also above, we can add an unlimited number of destinations (to external hard disks, other network computers, usb pens, nas servers, etc...), in each of those will be created and maintained a folder perfectly identical to the source folder.

At this point you have completed the backup configuration. To execute it you need simply to click the menu voice shown in the image below:

METHOD 2: Sinchronization with integrated zip compression

As explained in the introduction, Uranium has a powerful feature that allows to make a synchronization compressing individually each file in zip format.

Let's see the simple steps to do:

First it is necessary to add the folder item you want synchronize, as explained in previous instructions. But in this case we must NOT set up the item's synchronization (because this will be set in the zip compression options).

Then we must set up the zip compression for single files in the common destination and the zip incremental options:

As we can see in the image, we must select the option "Compress item in this destination", and then "Create and maintain a unique incremental zip file" and "Compress files individually".

Once we done this,  the common destination will have the zip file icon and will be in bold style. Moreover, we must remember that it is possible to add an unlimited number of destinations of this kind.

Finally it is necessary to set up another parameter in the backup set compression options, shown in the image below:

The option to select is "Synchronize: remove, from the zip file, any files that are no longer present in the source folder". Moreover, in this panel we can see other important options for incremental zip compression, like for example the file overwrite options (by default the program overwrites the destionation file when the date of the source file is newer). Let's click on "Apply" button to make the options effective.

At this point the backup set is perfectly configured and we can already execute it to test its functionality. In the destination folder we will find the exact folder structure of the source folders, but each file will be compressed in zip format. For example a file named "invoices.doc" will become "invoices.doc.zip".
At every backup procedure the zip files relative to files no more existing in the source folders will be deleted. The backup log will report always the number and the details of deleted files.

In this tutorial we analyzed two different methods available in Uranium to synchronize the contents of our folders, and therefore to have always a reserve copy of them. Also in this features the great versatility of Uranium allows to us to extremely customize and expand the program's functionalities, and to obatain always the better result for our requirements.
