Backup of ESX, ESXi and vSphere virtual machines
The following tutorial explains how to backup VMware ESX, ESXi and vSphere virtual machines.
Uranium Backup is a flexible, easy-to-use and cheap solution for backup,
replication an recovery of ESX, ESXi and vSphere virtual machines (3.5, 4.x,
5.x).
First of all you have to create a new Backup Set:
In order to add an ESX backup job to the Backup Set you just created, simply
click on the appropriate link or in the correspondent menu item:
Now you have to specify some important parameters: the ESX or vSphere server
address, the username and the password.
Uranium can connect itself to a single ESX host or to a vCenter server.
Once you entered the server address and the data to authenticate, click on the
button "Next".
The program will show you the list of virtual machines on the server:
You can select one or more virtual machines and then click on the button "Next".
In the last panel, we can set other importan options: the local destination
folder (it can also be a network folder, a network disk, an external drive or a
NAS device), the possibility to automatically copy the backup files to the
Backup Set's common destinations (Tape, DVD, Blu-Ray, Network, FTP, etc ...) and
if keep a certain number of copies (that will be overwritten in rotation).
To apply all the settings and create the ESX backup item click on the button
"OK".
As you can see in the image below, you will have the new ESX item in the list:
In order to start the backup of your virtual machines, simply run the backup set
you've created, like shown in the image below:
Once the backup has been completed, you will have, in the destination folder you
chose, a folder containing all virtual machines files (configuration files and
.vmdk disk files). These files can be used to restore the virtual machine to the
same ESX server or to any other compatible server, with a few clicks.
For this reason, Uranium is a fast and very useful product if you need to
move/replicate a virtual machine to a different ESX or vSphere server.
