Uranium Backup 8 main news
Last update: May 18, 2010
Disaster Recovery:
Drive
Image Backup / Bare Metal Restore / System State Backup
Uranium can make complete images of the system disk (disk imaging), in order to allow a complete recovery of the operating system and of all configurations (bare metal restore). Available on Vista, Server 2008 and Windows 7.
On Windows Server 2008 it is also possible to make backups of the System State.
Blu-Ray backup / UDF File System
Uranium 8 can make backups on HD-DVD and
Blu-Ray discs.
Using these type of media it is possible to reach a storage capacity up to 50 GB on a
single disc, and Uranium is now compatible with any optical media available
today.
Uranium 8 integrates a new and more powerful burning engine,
that uses the UDF format and is fully Unicode. Finally, it has been added a new
disc verification option.
Thanks to the UDF file system, it is possible to burn also files bigger than 2
GB, while thanks to Unicode there are no more limits in supported languages and
characters for folder/file names (therefore also Chinese,
Russian, Hebrew, Greek, Arabic, etc ...).
Full
UNICODE support
With version 8 Uranium becomes a fully unicode software, that supports, in the interface and
in any backup procedure, all languages and characters of the world (therefore also Chinese, Russian, Hebrew, Greek, Arabic, etc. .. ..). Uranium 8
can be used on systems in any language and there will be no more errors in the backups due to the presence of non-ascii characters.
SQL Server Restore:
manual and automatic
Uranium 8 can make manual or automatic restore tasks of SQL Server databases.
In its previous versions Uranium didn't allow to make SQL Server restore, because the backup files generated by Uranium are in the standard
format and so they are restorable also with Microsoft tools.
Now you can restore databases also in automatic/planned way: in fact, you can
add restore jobs in a Backup Set, and you can schedule them as common backup
tasks.
The SQL Server restore feature allows the restore on a database different from
the source database or even on a new database, without the need to create it
previously. Therefore you can use this feature also to synchronize two or more
databases in a fully automated manner.
TAPE: full
UNICODE support and paths longer than 255 characters
In Uranium 8 the Tape backup features fully supports Unicode, and so you can
backup files and folders with names in any language encoding (therefore also
Chinese, Russian, Hebrew, Greek, Arabic, etc. .. ..). There will be no more
errors due to the presence of non-ascii characters.
Moreover, now you can copy on tape files and folders that have paths longer than
255 characters, overcoming in this way the default limitation of Windows
systems.
Volume Shadow Copy
(copy of open/in-use files): better performances
The feature to copy open files has been improved in speed and resource
consumption. Now Uranium doesn't need to create temporary files anymore (practically
reduced to zero the disc space required) and can optimize the memory used for
shadow copies, with reusing of existing ones and deleting of that ones no more
needed. Uranium becomes a very powerful software for "hot backups" of Virtual
Machine files
(Hyper-V, VMware, etc...), of Microsoft Exchange files, database files, etc ...
Improved interface
/ new minor features / minor bugs fixed
The interface of the options panel has been redesigned and grouped more clearly
using an initial menu, where the user can easily find the options he needs. The
SQL Server items configuration can be made using a very clear wizard. The
configuration panel for e-mail notifications now has a more clear grouping of
the various options.
Uranium 8, like every major release, fixes several little bugs of the previous
versions, and it has been optimized in many parts to obtain lower memory
consumption and better performances.
FTPS: Uranium now supports also the FTP-SSL protocol, that allows to make file
transfer tasks over an encrypted and secure channel.
Free ISO file creator: in the recent versions of Uranium Backup 8, the creation
of ISO files is available also in the freeware version.
New translations: Uranium 8 is available in many languages: Italian, English,
Spanish, Polish, Dutch, French, German, Russian and Brazilian Portuguese.
Notes on the update from
previous versions
The update fron previous versions requires a minimum attention, first of all
because the new unicode support forces Uranium to use configuration and log
files in this new format.
If the installation is made in the same directory of version 7 or earlier,
Uranium will automatically convert and import in few seconds all existing
configuration files, making a safety copy of them first. That conversion it is
not "reversible", therefore converted files will be no more readable
by the previous versions of Uranium.
However you can install Uranium Backup 8 in a different folder, because Uranium
is a "portable" software, and so you can maintain the two separated versions (that
can perfectly coexist). In any case, you can use the service only for one of them. Language files (that
are unicode for Uranium 8) and the procedures for Auto Update from internet will
be maintained separated.
As for the default options of backup procedures and compatibility, there are several variations that must be taken into consideration:
- The Tape backup option "In case of error, continue the backup anyway" is
enabled by default
- The zip compression options for checking files also during compression are
enabled by default
- The Volume Shadow Copy option to copy open files is enabled by default
- The encrypted zip files and the files encrypted on tape with the "whole
file encryption" option with previous versions, cannot be decrypted with
version 8. You must use the version 7 to decrypt that files.
- The name of the unique root folder based on item's MD5 hash will be different
and so will be created a new folder with a different code.
