From a purely technical, this feature consists of an additional program (the "service"
precisely) called "UraniumService.exe." This program can be installed among the
services of NT-based operating systems (Windows
NT, 2000, XP, 2003, VISTA, 2008,
7) through a special control panel available in Uranium general options. However, the
installation and modification of the properties of the service can also be made
manually or with system scripts.
The key feature that distinguishes a service is to be a program that is loaded into
memory without any user having to log in to the machine. This means quite simply
that the service is a background program that is always active, and that therefore
allows to schedule in a very efficient and reliable manner activities as may be
that of backup.
The Uranium Backup service, once installed and launched, will assume control of
all activities of scheduling backups, and will execute all backup procedures through
the use of Uranium.
In conclusion, we can certainly say that the availability of a native NT service
makes Uranium product of an higher level, thanks to this "enterprise" feature of
fundamental importance for server systems and for the management of solid and reliable
backup architectures.
The function of copying files locked by other applications, otherwise known as
Volume Shadow Copy, is a feature already implemented in previous versions of Uranium Backup, but it was limited only to Windows Server 2003 operating systems.
Volume Shadow Copy is basically an advanced Windows service that, among other things,
enables the operating system itself or other programs to make a "snapshot" of certain
files regardless of whether they may be at that time "in use" or open in exclusive
mode by some other program. When you make a snapshot, an identical copy of the open
file is created in a special system location, from which is then possible to copy
it without problems. And this is just the thing that Uranium makes to copy also those
files that are "in use" / locked by other programs.
With version 7 of Uranium, the Volume Shadow Copy function has been extended to all operating
systems on which that service is available, namely:
XP, 2003, VISTA, 2008, 7.
The possibility of using Volume Shadow Copy makes Uranium an extremely powerful
program because, through this feature, it is able to easily copy database files,
Outlook e-mail files, data files of other applications, system files, files of the
MS
Exchange mail server,
virtual machines
files, etc.…, thereby producing extremely
faithful and complete backups.
SQL Server Backup: new features
The SQL Server backup has been improved with significant new features.
First, you can now add the backup of all databases of a particular server by inserting
a single "global" element, because at every backup the program is able to detect
dynamically which and how many databases it must backup.
It was also added the possibility to filter the databases, or to select which databases
the program must exclude from the backup, even on the basis of an advanced filter
based on their names.
Finally, Uranium now supports the native "on-the-fly" compression
of the backup
files for SQL Server 2008. Using this option the database backup files are created
on disk already compressed, which allows you to increase both performance and space
saving.
Thanks to these new useful features, but also for the already consolidated characteristics
of simplicity, versatility and wealth of options, Uranium Backup can be considered
one of the best tool for planning backup strategies of Microsoft
SQL Server databases.
Tape: improved performances
While maintaining the usual reliability, Uranium Backup 7 presents significant improvements
in performance. In fact, the
speed of creating the
list of files before the backup and the speed of creating the list
of files on tape to restore have been significantly increased.
Thanks to its qualities of lightness, speed and stability, and thanks to its incomparable
ease of use, Uranium can be considered one of the best products to make Tape backup
on Windows Server 2008, Windows Vista and Windows
7, and
can be used to definitively replace Ntbackup.
In fact, we must remember that in these recent Microsoft operating systems is
no longer present the integrated program Ntbackup, with whom it was possible to
perform "file-by-file" backup on tape, but there is only a tool
to create an image of the whole system. This lack makes Uranium an absolutely useful
product to perform backups only of the data you want, and if you want to restore
only individual files or folders.
E-mail notifications: new
advanced options
With version 7 Uranium has introduced new advanced options for the e-mail notifications
at the end of backup operations. With these, you can specify two separate groups
of recipients and submit sending to numerous conditions
on the result or duration of the backup. You can also set the sending of regular
e-mail notification regardless of other conditions, so as to be always
aware that the software is active and executes requested operations.
No other backup software has a configuration of e-mail sending so powerful and detailed.
